Expert advice and methodological support during testing

Challenge
Organisations providing social services in the Liberec Region are looking for new ways to more effectively support clients with autism spectrum disorders, dementia, mental or physical disabilities. At the same time, they need tools that will facilitate the work of staff and bring greater involvement of clients in therapeutic activities.

Solution
Thanks to an initiative by EDIH Northeast Bohemia, the Regional Development Agency, the Liberec Region, and EDIH Madrid Region in Spain, Robic—a unique AI-based social robot from the Spanish company INROBICS REHAB—was brought to Jablonec and Turnov as part of the Test before Invest service.

Robic is the first and so far the only certified AI robot in Europe designed specifically for therapeutic purposes. It helps develop communication, motor skills, and cognitive functions through interactive exercises.

As part of the testing phase through EDIH NEB, the facility received the technology free of charge for four months. Robic records clients’ progress using various metrics (attention, vocabulary, motor skills, reactions), and the outputs will be used to evaluate the benefits for everyday practice in social services.

Results (ongoing pilot)
– First use of this type of technology in social services in the Czech Republic
– Great interest in working with the robot on the part of both caregivers and clients themselves
– Collection and subsequent evaluation of real data on changes in behavior, cognition, and client engagement
– Verification of the benefits of AI for streamlining work in the care of people with specific needs

Quotes
“With the help of the Regional Development Agency, we completed three online training courses with Spanish manufacturers, and we use Robic, which is intuitively controlled using a Czech-language app on tablet, when working with selected clients. Some communicate only through sound buttons, others through sign language. The robot speaks Czech, can adapt to them, and engage them in interaction. Robic brings a new dimension to social services—interaction with the robot entertains and motivates clients while providing valuable outputs for staff work.”

Funding
The pilot testing of the technology was funded by our European Digital Innovation Hub Northeast Bohemia (EDIH NEB) project, co-financed by the European Union under the Digital Europe program and the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade.
