Digitisation of a national cultural monument

Organisation: the Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes
Service provider: the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, UHK (member of the EDIH NEB consortium)
Area of support: digitization and 3D technologies in the field of cultural heritage
Type of organisation: Public sector – museum
Year of implementation: 2024

Description of cooperation:
Within the framework of EDIH Northeast Bohemia we have established cooperation between the Department of Archaeology at the University of Hradec Kralove and the Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes. The aim was to use digital technology to process the unique Probošt mechanical nativity scene – the only nativity scene in the Czech Republic to be declared a national cultural monument.

Benefits of digitisation:
Specialists from the University of Hradec Králové carried out 3D scanning of selected figures from the crib, creating a detailed digital documentation of these artefacts. In addition to the scanning itself, the possibility of 3D printing the figures was also tested, which opens up new possibilities in the field of archiving as well as in the museum’s educational and presentation activities.

Impact on the organization:
The museum gained access to modern technologies that support the preservation and further use of cultural heritage. Thanks to the cooperation with EDIH NEB was able to use a service that would otherwise have been technologically and financially demanding.
